What’s included in a financial plan?

Our comprehensive financial plans provide a holistic view of your financial life, including investment strategies, retirement projections, tax planning, risk management, and estate considerations. It also includes the interrelationship between personal and corporate wealth for those who are business owners. We tailor your plan to your unique circumstances and goals, providing a clear roadmap for your financial future.

Why should we have a financial plan?

A financial plan brings clarity and direction to your financial journey. It helps you understand your current position, identify potential risks and opportunities, and develop strategies to achieve your long-term goals.

Is working with a wealth advisor the same as receiving investment advice?

While investment advice is a part of our wealth advisory services, it’s not the whole picture. Wealth advisory takes a broader approach, considering all aspects of your financial life, from budgeting, tax planning, and debt management to retirement and estate planning. Investment advice focuses specifically on your portfolio and investment decisions.

How much time does it take to complete a financial plan?

Our financial planning process begins with a signed engagement letter, followed by a detailed information request. Once all required details have been collected, we develop your plan and typically complete a draft within six weeks for you to review. Once your plan is finalized, it can take six months or longer (depending on complexity) to implement. Because financial planning is an ongoing process, we recommend reviewing your plan annually or whenever significant life changes occur.

Do I have to invest with Moraine Wealth Advisory if you complete my financial plan?

No. Engaging Moraine Wealth Advisory for planning and advice does not require you to invest with us. You are free to use anyone you choose to work with for investment advice. If you work with us on the investment side, there will be no additional planning fees moving forward.

What’s the difference between retirement projections and comprehensive financial planning?

Retirement projections focus solely on estimating your retirement income and expenses. A comprehensive financial plan, on the other hand, integrates retirement planning with all other aspects of your financial life, including investment strategies, tax planning, and risk management. It provides a more holistic and personalized approach to ensuring financial security down the road.

How much time does it take to complete a financial plan?

The time required to complete a financial plan varies depending on the complexity of your financial situation. Typically, it involves several meetings and data gathering, and the process can take anywhere from several weeks to several months. We’re committed to being thorough and accurate in planning to ensure your future is secure.

Why should I work with an independent retirement planner?

Working with an independent retirement planner means you’re receiving unbiased advice that’s tailored to your specific needs. Independent planners aren’t tied to any specific financial products or banks, which means we’re able to provide you with objective recommendations that prioritize your best interests. You’re free to take your plan and implement it with your current advisor.

How can I ensure a consistent income stream in retirement?

Generating a reliable income stream is a top priority in retirement. We can help you develop a comprehensive retirement income plan that considers various sources, including your investment portfolio, retirement savings plans, pensions, corporate dividends, and government benefits.  Incorporating both short and long-term tax planning into your income generation strategy enhances your wealth and your estate.

What strategies can I employ to minimize taxes on my retirement income?

Tax-efficient retirement planning is one of our specialties. We can help you implement strategies to minimize your tax liability, such as utilizing tax-advantaged accounts, strategically withdrawing from retirement savings, corporate accounts, and utilizing income splitting where appropriate, while taking advantage of available tax credits and deductions.

What’s your investing philosophy?

Our approach to investing is a hybrid of passive and active management. We aim to provide returns that are close to the broader market with significantly less risk. We achieve this through global asset allocation, which utilizes broad index-weighted ETFs and investment allocations to active managers in the areas of small-cap, mid-cap, fixed income, private credit, and absolute return investments. Our approach to risk management aims to cushion the impact of market declines while maximizing gains when markets rise. Through extensive due diligence and modelling, we construct our portfolios with a methodical, evidence-based approach.

Do you offer portfolio reviews for prospective clients?

Yes, we’re happy to schedule time to review your portfolio with you. This allows us to assess your current investment strategy and identify potential areas for improvement. Book a discovery call with our advisors and take this valuable step in determining if our services are the right fit for you.

As members of the Financial Planning Association of Canada, we’re also held to industry standards and best practices to further protect your best interests.

How do you measure the performance of my investments?

We provide regular reports and updates, and we’re always available to discuss your portfolio’s progress and answer any questions you may have. We also provide very transparent reporting, which makes it incredibly easy for clients to reconcile changes in account value.

What strategies do you use to manage risk in my portfolio?

Portfolio design is about understanding and managing risk. We’ll look at the different types of risk that can impact your portfolio, including market risk, interest rates, and liquidity. We use this information to build models to help us understand how these risks can affect your returns, allowing us to design a portfolio that reflects your unique risk tolerance.
